Continuation of the DAM is part of the coalition agreement
A positive signal from the future federal government in favour of the protection and sustainable use of the sea
The continuation of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) is part of the Coalition Agreement 2025! We are delighted that the future Federal Government has taken up the proposal of the DAM Evaluation Commission, whose core messages include the continuation of the DAM as one of the world’s largest research alliances.
The stabilisation of the association of leading German marine research institutions is an important step towards a more sustainable approach to coasts, seas and oceans. One of the central goals of the DAM is to develop and provide knowledge for action for the protection and sustainable use of the sea – as a basis for political and societal decisions.
The coalition agreement also emphasises the importance of marine protection: “When it comes to marine protection, we are paying particular attention to combating pollution, preserving biodiversity and removing munitions waste. We see it as our responsibility as a whole to continue the emergency programme for the recovery of munitions in the North Sea and Baltic Sea in the long term. To this end, we are establishing a federal competence centre based in the eastern federal states, in which scientific institutions, the private sector and operational authorities will work together.”
For the DAM, the Federal Government’s Marine Commissioner was and is also a significant and important point of contact. The establishment of a central marine commissioner has significantly strengthened cross-departmental cooperation on marine protection and the sustainable use of the oceans in the last legislative period.
