Federal Cross of Merit for DAM board member Ulrich Bathmann

The long-standing director of the IOW receives the award for his outstanding commitment to marine research and marine conservation.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bathmann, long-standing director of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (IOW) and board member of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) and the German Marine Research Consortium (KDM), has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his outstanding commitment. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded him the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on January 9, 2025 for his services to researching and protecting the seas and oceans. According to the Office of the President, this includes in particular his tireless efforts as Director of the IOW and his great commitment as Chairman of the KDM Board and as a member of the DAM Board. With his decades of work, he has made an important and significant contribution to the networking of marine research institutions in Germany and to their international visibility. The DAM Executive Board and office congratulate Ulrich Bathmann on this special award and thank him warmly for his tireless commitment as a member of the DAM Executive Board.

About his career

After studying biology and oceanography, Ulrich Bathmann (born 1954) worked at various prestigious research institutions and traveled and explored the world’s oceans on numerous ship expeditions. In 2011, he was appointed Director of the IOW and Professor of Earth System Research at the University of Rostock. During his tenure at the IOW until 2022, he further developed the institute’s research profile in a cross-system and interdisciplinary manner for a global understanding of processes in coastal and marginal seas. In addition, he contributed the expertise of the IOW and his personal expertise to numerous national and international scientific organizations and research committees, including the German section of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, the German Marine Research Consortium and the German Marine Research Alliance. In the latter two organizations, which play a key role in shaping the content and strategic direction of marine research in Germany, he is still active today as Chairman of the Board and on the Board of Directors. As spokesman, he was also responsible for the establishment of the Leibniz Science Campus Phosphorus Research in Rostock and the expansion of the “Martime Systems” department at the Interdisciplinary Faculty of the University of Rostock. Ulrich Bathmann continues to be involved in numerous committees whose work is aimed at promoting excellent science in the service of environmental and marine protection.
