Lecture series on the sustainable use of the sea – part 2
Starting April 3, scientists from the DAM research mission sustainMare will once again provide weekly insights into their research
The public lecture series “Protection and sustainable use of our oceans and coastal regions”, which Universität Hamburg is offering together with the DAM research mission sustainMare, is entering its second round: from April 3, scientists from the mission will provide insights into their research every Wednesday evening of the summer semester from 6 to 7 pm. The thematic spectrum of the 14 lectures ranges from the role of the ocean in man-made climate change to the interactions between offshore wind power, fishing and munitions waste in the sea to legal and political-social framework conditions.
The self-contained lectures are offered digitally via Zoom and are aimed at people interested in science without prior knowledge. Registration is not required to participate. Further information on the program can be found on the Universität Hamburg website.
Research in the conflicting areas of protection and use of coasts and the sea
In the trans- and interdisciplinary DAM research mission sustainMare, over 200 scientists from 28 research institutions are working together with stakeholders to investigate how the use and protection of the oceans can be considered together and implemented sustainably. After all, oceans and coasts are increasingly being used as a source of food, energy and raw materials, as a transportation route and for tourism. The “blue economy” is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. Intensive use puts a strain on the sea and coasts: noise, pollution, consumption and damage to the seabed, changes to natural currents. Added to this is man-made climate change with rising temperatures and changes in weather patterns.
How will these pressures continue to develop and combine? How will the sea react? The researchers want to find answers to these and other questions. The aim of the DAM research mission is to develop and evaluate measures that support the sustainable use of marine resources and ecosystem services and promote good environmental status in marine systems. The mission focuses on the North Sea and Baltic Sea – but the results should be useful far beyond.
