Biodiversity
Seas and oceans are home to millions of different plants, animals and microorganisms that live in a wide variety of ecosystems. Some of them have only been partially researched, many are completely unknown. This biodiversity contributes to the health of the oceans, regulates the climate and provides valuable resources. Protecting biodiversity is crucial for the survival of our planet.
However, overexploitation and pollution pose a serious threat to underwater biodiversity. The consequences are already being felt in many places: species are leaving their traditional habitats, many species are disappearing completely and becoming extinct. Examples from many parts of the world show that marine communities can recover if we restore and protect their destroyed habitats and use the ecosystems sustainably. We know what measures we can take to achieve this. It is now up to us to put this knowledge into practice – and thus preserve the oceans as the basis of human life.
